Assam Agricultural University

Gone are the days when agriculture was only meant for the farmers. Assam Agricultural University (AAU), established on April 1, 1969, is the first institution of its kind in the whole of North-Eastern Region of India to offer degrees in the field of Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Home Science, Fisheries Science, Horticulture and Sericulture. Additionally, Assam Agricultural University offer a specialized MBA course in Agri-Business. Assam Agricultural University conducts innovative research in various fields of agricultural sciences and its students participates in educational and extension programmes in agriculture mainly in rural Assam keeping the regional profile and economy in mind. AAU can boast about a well-stocked library with more than 50,000 books and journals to provide the knowledge to the students. There AAU Library has a good stock of books, journals, etc. The current strength of the books, periodicals etc. are listed below (as on March,2015): • Books: 1,68,135 • Back vols. of periodicals: 16,711 • Current periodicals: 47 • Ph.D theses: 315 • M.Sc dissertations: 2213 • Reports: 6581 • Newspaper: 13 • Popular magazine: 6 Assam Agricultural University Affiliated Colleges There are a good number of affiliated colleges under AAU, viz. 1. College of Home Science at Jorhat (1969) 2. College of Fisheries at Raha (1988) 3. Biswanath College of Agriculture at Biswanath Chariali (1988) 4. Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science at Joyhing, North Lakhimpur (1988). 5. Presently, the University has three more colleges under its jurisdiction, viz., 6. College of Sericulture, Titabar There are other few more regional research stations at Shillongani, Diphu, Gossaigaon, Lakhimpur; and commodity research stations at Kahikuchi, Buralikson, Tinsukia, Kharua, Burnihat and Mandira were added to generate location and crop specific agricultural production packages.
